SCIENTIFIC WORKSHOP “CHALLENGES IN DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF PULMONARY FUNGAL INFECTION”
90% of people with fungal lung infection have not detected, cause serious illness and death.
About 50% post TB people who suspected relapse TB have chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA).
Vietnam is the country with the fifth highest burden of CPA chronic fungal diseases in the world with over 55,000 cases.
Currently, more than 2 million people die every year in the world due to fungal diseases and cause long-term illness for hundreds of millions of people. After the COVID -19 pandemic, the rate of patients with lung fungus requiring hospitalization increased significantly. Fungal diseases are a global health threat, but there is not enough attention in accessing diagnosis and treatment. If infected people are diagnosed and treated promptly, each year they will be able to prevent 1.3 million deaths from fungal infections, especially fungal lung infection. It is estimated that Vietnam has about 15,000 cases of invasive pulmonary Aspergillosis and 55,000 CPA cases each year. However, the diagnosis rate is still below the threshold, only about 1/1000 cases are detected. The mortality rate due to invasive pulmonary Aspergillosis is very high, ranging from 30-80%, especially if not treated, 100% of patients will die. 5-year mortality rate of approximately 50% in CPA patients who have not diagnosed and treated promptly.
Therefore, every year, February 1 is the "World Aspergillosis Day". On this day, people around the world gather to learn about Aspergillosis, a little-known infection, and share knowledge in the hope of raising awareness within health systems and people to detect, Treat and prevent fungal deaths and promote treatment and research initiatives.
Responding to the celebration of "World Aspergillosis Day" and aiming to update knowledge about fungal pulmonary disease and treatment for medical staff working at medical facilities nationwide. On February 1, 2023, at the Great Hall, the National Lung Hospital successfully organized a scientific conference with the topic "“CHALLENGES IN DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF PULMONARY FUNGAL INFECTION”".
At the Workshop focus on: Timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment of invasive pulmonary Aspergillus fungus; Challenges in diagnosing chronic pulmonary Aspergillus fungus; The role of microbiology in diagnosing lung disease caused by Aspergillus fungus; Transmission of drug-resistant strains from the environment to patients in Vietnam; Pulmonary Mucormycosis – a new challenge for respiratory doctors; Extrapulmonary mucomycosis; Antifungal pharmacology in clinical practice – issues that need attention; Introducing the diagnostic guide to chronic pulmonary Aspergillus fungal disease;..
Professor David W. Denning participated the meeting with presentation titled "Comments on Aspergillus and Apergillosis". He is the professor of infectious diseases and global health and medical mycology at the University of Manchester. He was the founding president, executive director and chief executive of Global Action For Fungal Infections (GAFFI) (2013-2023), which focusses on the global impact of fungal disease. He became the director of the UK's National Aspergillosis Centre in Manchester, which treats people with chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA), and led the group that produced the first guidelines for CPA in 2016.
The conference was held successful with around 1,000 attendances. The scientific conference attracted the participation of leading domestic and international medical experts to provide knowledge and raise awareness of medical staff as well as the community about pulmonary fungal disease caused by Aspergillus and other fungi.
